Do you know how much CO2 is generated by your apartment, car, groceries or trips? Measuring the carbon footprint is a difficult task. However, it is necessary if we want to live in a climate-neutral world in 2050.
We have made a promise that by 2050 we will reduce all net greenhouse gas emissions generated by mBank to zero. This is why we take the decarbonisation of our business very seriously. We have already taken some measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with our own energy consumption. Last year they went down by 40%. But our main task is to reduce emissions connected with financing granted by our bank.
To plan the decarbonisation of our loan portfolio, we must first estimate the greenhouse gas emissions generated by real property or vehicles, and in particular by large-scale investment projects financed by our bank.
mBank is the first bank in Poland to join the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF)
To make reliable estimations, we have joined the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF). This organisation brings together over 240 financial institutions all over the world. It has developed a harmonised global approach to assessing and disclosing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with banks. We are the first Polish institution to join PCAF, which gives us access to its methodologies and tools.
PCAF brings together over 240 financial institutions all over the world. The organisation has developed a harmonised global approach to assessing and disclosing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the financial sector. This enables financial institutions to make transparent disclosures on the GHG emissions generated by their loan and investment portfolios. The PCAF methodology measures the GHG emissions associated with corporate loans, securities, mortgages and motor vehicle loans.
There is a lot of work ahead of us, but we are going in the right direction – towards climate neutrality.
